Three important metabolites produced by the probiotic Alterion have been identified: hypoxanthine, pantothenate and nicotinic acid. Their effects have been demonstrated in vitro using Caco-2 cell cultures. They stimulate cell proliferation and enhance intestinal integrity as measured by the transepithelial resistance (TEER).

They are also able to modify the microbiota profile at ileum and caecum levels, shifting to more butyrate-producing bacteria and increasing the SCFA production.
